Painter of hunting scenes, genre scenes, landscapes and portraits.

Dogs have always been his most important motif.

His hunting scenes are closely related to those by Ludolph de Jongh and Abraham Hondius.

 

Married in 1649. Father and teacher of Adriaen II, Cornelis and Frans Beeldemaker.

 

Adriaen Beeldemaker lived and worked in The Hague from 1676 – 1709.

 

He has also lived in Dordrecht for six years between 1656 and 1662, and in Leiden (where he is documented in 1650-51, 1654-55, 1665-68 and 1673-75).

 

 

When hunting hares, the spaniels that you see in the foreground were used to find a hare by following its scent. The greyhound in the right background was set to chase and kill the hare. The spaniels then interceded to “protect” the dead hare until the hunter arrived. 

 

 

Because it is lively representation of hounds by one of the Dutch 17th century specialists of hunting scenes.
