About Petrus Schotanus
Dutch painter
Dronrijp 1610 –circa 1669/1674 Leewarden
Painter of still lifes. He also painted four church interiors, a few history subjects and a pair of portraits.
Son of a preacher.
Married in 1637 the daughter of the mayor of Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, the northernmost province of the Dutch Republic.
It is not known whom Schotanus studied painting with, possibly with Lambert Jacobsz. (1598 – 1636), an Amsterdam-born history painter who lived in Leeuwarden from 1620 until his death in 1636.
According to some scholars Schotanus must have studied painting in Leiden, where a member of his family was a professor of law.
Schotanus and his wife moved to Amsterdam from the end of the 1650s until 1665. After the death of his first wife he remarried a Frisian woman. The couple lived in Schotanus’ birthplace Dronrijp for just over one year and finally in Leewarden, where our painter passed away before January 27th 1675.
