About Abraham Susenier

Dutch painter
Leiden circa 1620 – 1666/1672 Dordrecht (his last dated painting is from 1666; when his wife passed away in 1672 she was buried as his widow.)

His last name is sometimes spelt “Sussenier”.

Versatile painter of still lifes, marine paintings and winter landscapes.
His teacher is unknown.

There is only one fully signed still life known by Susenier, it sits at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. A second still life, in the Museum of Dordrecht, has a barely legible signature. Susenier regularly monogrammed his paintings. His “AB S” monogram was in the past erroneously identified as by Abraham van Beijeren.  It was only in 2003 that Fred Meijer identified the “AB S” monogram as that of Abraham Susenier.

Susenier was born in Leiden, lived at The Hague between 1640 and 1646 and then, probably until his death, in Dordrecht.
He married Maaiken Isaak in Dordrecht in 1646, the couple had seven daughters. That same year he joined the Painter’s Guild of Saint Luke in Dordrecht.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because Susenier shows his sense for balance by adding a few touches of colour with the pink roses and the peaches in a basically monochrome composition.
