Maswiens, Joseph
"The stalls of the Church of Saint Gertrude in Louvain"

In short

Joseph Maswiens, pupil of Jules Victor Genisson, specialised like his master in such a church interior views in a Romantic-realistic style.

The Church of Saint Gertrude originally belonged to the Abbey of the same name, of which little has been preserved.

About Joseph Maswiens

Belgian painter
Louvain 1828 – 1880 Louvain

Church interior painter from the Romantic period.

Pupil of the church interior painter Victor-Jules Génisson (St Omer 1805 – 1860 Bruges). Génisson had moved in 1840 from Brussels to Louvain.

Both Génisson and Maswiens painted realistic church interiors with a Romantic touch.

About our painting

The Gothic Church of Saint Gertrude belonged originally to the abbey of the same name: only the church and a few monastic buildings still exist. The abbey was suppressed in 1797 and the land was divided into three lots and sold at public auction in 1798.

Our painting dates from 1866.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because it is such a beautiful composition, bathing in a warm sunlight.
