In short
Fristup was one those 19th century Danish painters who fell in love with Italy, turning it into one of his favourite subjects. Two years after this painting he married his second wife, who came from Assisi.
Fristup was the director of the school of design of the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen.
About Niels Fristup
Danish painter
Copenhagen 1837 – 1909 Frederiksberg
His first name is sometimes spelt Nilaus.
Student of the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen from 1852 until the start of 1864.
Fristup travelled abroad from October 1875 until the end of 1878. During this trip his wife, who suffered from chest disease, passed away in Venice, where she was buried. After his return his views of Italy, including our view of Pompei, were very well received at the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen (“viewed with applause”).
In the summer of the following year (1879) he travelled again to Italy, where he met his second wife, the daughter of a hotelier from Assisi.
In 1881 he started teaching at the decoration school of the Academy of Copenhagen, where he soon became its director.
In 1883 he joined the Danish Academy of Fine Arts and in 1890 he was elected a member of the Academy Council.
Why should you buy this painting?
Because it is an attractive view of Pompei, showing a street with Roman ruins and a large area that was then not yet excavated in 1877.
