Doeser, Jacobus Johannes
"Starry night over a pond"
In short

Our expressive-realistic, wonderfully coloured landscape at night was clearly influenced by that other Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh. It dates from 1934 and is completely unique for Doeser, surpassing all that he ever painted.

About Jacobus Johannes Doeser

Dutch painter
Utrecht 1884 – 1970 Heemstede

Painter of colourful, expressive flower still lifes. Occasionally he also painted landscapes, some seascapes and portraits.

Jacobus (Jaap for his friends) Doeser was an autodidact who experienced many developments in the modern visual arts. He mastered plenty of techniques such as drawing, oil, pastel and watercolour painting and lithography.

From 1915 until 1919 he lived in The Gooi, in the artist’s village of Laren. “Het Gooi” is an attractive region in North Holland, between Amsterdam and Utrecht. The poor farmer’s villages of Laren and Blaricum attracted many artists since the end of the 19th century. In Laren Doeser came into contact with restless, but inspired painters who were influenced by the spiritual, esoteric ideas of Theosophy and of emerging Socialism: Piet Mondrian, Jacob Bendien and Nico van Rijn.

From about 1920 until 1939 Doeser lived in Germany, in Leipzig.
At his return in Holland in 1940 he settled in Bennebroek, then the smallest village of Holland.

Our painting is absolutely unique within the artistic production of Jacobus Johannes Doeser. In the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh 1853 - 1890) Doeser has paradoxically coloured the night under a starry firmament. Under a thick layer of dust our restorer has recovered these rich, flaming colours that one can now admire. At the centre of his composition a bare tree seems to express, to reflect the subjective, possibly tormented thoughts of our painter’s spirit.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because although inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s art it is an excellent and original, very personal work of art.
