About Matthijs Harings
Dutch painter
Leeuwarden circa 1593 – circa 1667 Leeuwarden
Portrait painter.
Possibly pupil of Simon Juckes, the father of Wybrand de Geest. On October 10th 1611 Harings wrote a rhyme in Leeuwarden in the album amicorum of Wybrand de Geest, who might have been his fellow pupil. Wybrand de Geest (Leeuwarden 1592 – 1661/65 Leeuwarden) became the most important portrait painter of Frisia. Circa 1613 de Geest left for Utrecht where he studied under Abraham Bloemaert (Gorinchem 1566 – 1651 Utrecht).
In 1634 Harings is mentioned as captain of the local Civic Guard, in 1636 as deacon of the Roformed Church.
Harings was an alderman in his native Leeuwarden from 1641 until 1644. The next two years he was also part of that town’s council.
